are 4th year results fair?
Submitted by mohammed1 on Fri, 02/07/2010 - 7:25pm.
Now that the grades are out, and us saying farewell to phase 2, one has to be honest with himself and ask: was i assessed fairly?
does the grade we get actually match what I understood and learned from phase 2. I personally say, definitely not. In terms of study material and clinical skills it was interesting and easy, and surely many of us invested a lot of their time but what was the result: something far off from their real academic level. although very few failed 4th year, it would have been much worse if some questions were not "familiar"
firstly, the system's assessments. Did they asses our understanding?. For the CNS exam, the grade was surprising because the exam was easy, then we knew that some questions were reframed in a non academic manner. The same manner went on in the other two assessment. The RR assessment was a scandal. In the osce, while the content of the exam was legitimate, was it asked with logic? Did the student actually even have the time to understand the questions? Was the student’s knowledge being assessed or was it his memorizing skills?? Did we get the time to be able to identify the radiology pictures???? are 5 minutes enough???? Surely these questions have come across our mind (and probably still do) I hope some of you could spare some time and share their thoughts on what we experienced during this year…. Your opinion is important!!
Yours sincerely, Mohammed Khalil
Hello there, You should
Hello there,
You should have started with a greatings from the US of A. I hope you all are fine.
First of all, i would to say mabrook to all of who who graduated with a BSMC, and as you said farewell phase II. I would like to add that i do agree on most of the points you raised, but not all.
See... the content was nice, not becuase they made it nice and intresting, but because the topic it self was amusing. I say there could have been a much more intresting approach to this.
How would you know they repeated questions, veyr few were repeated right ?!. another point to mention is that the number of fails is by no mean a standard to evaluate an exam. Its the average however, that in my opinion was more skewed to the 60th percentile is the one i would like to look at.
Over all, to answer your question, no i dont think the exam was fair due to some of the reasons you mentioned.
thanks for ur reply!! im
thanks for ur reply!! im doing fine thank you..
first of all, ur right! my memory is a bit hazy, few of them reappeared!! thanks for the correction..
if we view the results statitically, they are not normallly distributed= not fair. 2 F and 3 A do make no sense. the results are obviously skewed (dunno to which direction).please do confirm this as i am not that good in Biostat...
I do agree that the exams
I do agree that the exams are unfair, esp the OSCE/OSPE way of format, and our last 2 exams where out of their league. I believe, not only do the exam committee not know what the curriculum is about, but also think highly of the teaching skills given in a limited time and our skills of studying in a weekend, and our memory seeing that they asked specific questions from 5 modules in a final worth 40% of the grade.
If I were permitted to add, I heard people having re-sits elsewhere get the grade they deserve, while our highest grade is a C - unfair.
Mr. Mohammed, if you think 2 Fs and 3 As do not make any sense, what do you think of 27 Fs and 2 As, and 1 A- as a cumulative grade?
